Children celebrate the sacraments at the last Shepherd’s Flock Mass of the RE year, and families and friends are invited to come. We use Loyola’s adaptive kits for Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. Sacramental preparation and celebration are offered to all children, adapted to their needs. They participate in the annual Parade of Saints as well as take part in our service opportunities. The Shepherd’s Flock class participates in all the other activities the RE program offers. Catechists work with parents to understand the needs and abilities of each student and to create learning objectives for each student.Ĭhildren who can participate in a typical RE classroom may choose to attend a traditional class on some Sundays. Meeting the children where they are is one of the keys to Shepherd’s Flock’s success. While the class has routines, it is not a scripted, traditional, age-level lesson plan. It might be a sequencing puzzle or a felt Bible story or a music station. For many of the students, being able to touch and feel an object is comforting, so catechists set up “stations” where students can work independently. They interact with children on their level and bring a variety of materials for various learning styles. Our catechists create a space that meets the unique needs of the students. Trained catechists, volunteers and parents work with each child on a one-to-one basis during the regular Sunday-morning class time.
In 2018, the program was awarded the New Wineskins Award from the National Conference on Catechetical Leadership for its extraordinary achievement in catechesis. We also use the multifaceted Loyola Press curriculum designed especially for use with children with special needs, The Finding God Adaptive Program.
We combine, innovate and adapt these various resources to meet the needs of our students. This model offers lessons and curriculum to support children as they experience the “sacred” in a hands-on manner. Shepherd’s Flock uses the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd model, teaching in an “atrium” environment to create a meaningful experience for the children. Our students may have learning challenges, be on the autism spectrum or have Down syndrome or other genetic disorders. In a time when small, family farms are being sold off, our multi-species family farm has expanded and is self-sustaining.Shepherd’s Flock is an intergenerational program that focuses on children and young people with special needs and their families. Along with His grace, our diligence, and original investment in top end genetics, Trillium Ridge Farm has evolved into a profitable farming enterprise of our own. Managing our pastures in multiple paddocks by high density rotational grazing has become the main focus of our enterprise. In doing so, we have helped create an arena where our genetically superior livestock can thrive on what our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has truly blessed us with. With the purchase of an Akaushi bull, we also have plans to offer F1 crosses and purebred Akaushis in the near future. We now raise Registered Berkshire hogs on our farms, and can offer "farrow to fork" pork to the public. While I had raised hogs since I was 12, we embarked on finding the finest quality pork that would enhance our grazing practices and passions. Our hobby has evolved into a 100+ head of registered hair sheep, 50 head of Registered Angus Cattle and a flock of multi-breed, naturally raised poultry. In 2012, Robin and I expanded the operation with the purchase of another 65 acre Blount County farm, aka "The Grass Factory" and another 60 acre farm in 2016.

Our first year not only produced the foundation for our current herd and flock, but provided many, many lessons on livestock husbandry and how to be good shepherds. We began with a few ADGA Registered Nubian Dairy goats and then shortly thereafter added 15 KHSI Registered Katahdin Hair Sheep.

But it was 20 plus years later when my wife, Robin, and I added a whole new dimension to my father's farming enterprise. Like many other small farms in Louisville TN, my family primarily operated a cow/calf operation. It provided an outdoor classroom where I was taught work ethic and an appreciation for raising livestock. As a twelve year old boy, I could not have even begun to fathom how living and working on a 100+ acre tract of ground would shape my life and help me evolve into the man I am today. Even though my father had been raised on a working, income producing farm, I knew nothing of the journey I was about to embark upon.
